Methocarbamol oral suspension contains the medicine methocarbamol which belongs to a group of medicines called muscle relaxants.
Methocarbamol oral suspension is used for the short-term treatment of pain and muscle spasm caused by injuries such as sprains and strains, within adults.
- Are allergic (hypersensitive) to methocarbamol, or have had any problems in the past with medicines containing methocarbamol
- Are allergic to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
- Have ever suffered any brain damage or coma
- Suffer from epilepsy or convulsions
- Suffer from muscle weakness (a disease called myasthenia gravis)
Tell your doctor or pharmacist before taking Methocarbamol oral suspension if you:
- are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
- are breastfeeding
- have, or have had, any kidney or liver problems
- are having any medical investigations or tests as Methocarbamol oral suspension could interfere with the results. Tell your doctor that you are taking Methocarbamol oral suspension before you have the test.
If you are not sure if any of the above applies to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking methocarbamol oral suspension.
This medicine is not intended for use in children due to a lack of data.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken or might take any other medicines. This includes medicines you buy without a prescription, including herbal medicines. This is because Methocarbamol affects the way some other medicines work.
Also some medicines can affect the way methocarbamol works.
If you are taking any of the following medicines, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist as Methocarbamol oral suspension may interact with them:
- Barbiturates which can be taken for epilepsy or to help you sleep.
- Appetite suppressants to help you lose weight.
- Medicines for stomach upsets or sea-sickness (anti-cholinergics).
- Psychotropic drugs for the treatment of anxiety, depression or other mental illnesses.
- If you are due to have anaesthetic for any reason, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Methocarbamol oral suspension.
If you are not sure if any of the above applies to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking methocarbamol oral suspension.
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Methocarbamol oral suspension. Take Methocarbamol oral suspension with a glass of water.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or might become pregnant unless your doctor tells you to.
Contact your doctor if you think you may be pregnant or are intending to become pregnant.
Do not take Methocarbamol oral suspension if you are breast-feeding or planning to breast-feed.
No data are available concerning the effect of this medicine on human fertility.
Methocarbamol oral suspension may make you feel sleepy and may affect your ability to drive, operate machinery and carry out other hazardous activities. These activities should therefore be avoided altogether until you are sure you are not affected.
This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per 5ml, that is to say essentially ‘sodium-free’.
This medicine contains 5mg sodium benzoate (E211) in each ml unit which is equivalent to 200mg total in the maximum daily dose.
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults: Take 1500 mg Methocarbamol four times a day. Sometimes a lower dose may be sufficient. You should spread the doses as evenly as possible over a 24-hour period.
Elderly: older patients may only need half the usual dose to give the same relief from the pain and muscle spasms.
Children: The Methocarbamol oral suspension should not be given to children.
Liver impairment: you may need a longer interval between taking the suspension if you have liver disease.
You should always follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
The Methocarbamol oral suspension is for short-term treatment. Take it for as long as your doctor has recommended, or until you no longer need it to ease the pain. Any unused medicine should be returned to your pharmacist.
Take Methocarbamol oral suspension with a glass of water.
Instructions for use
The oral suspension must be shaken well before use.
- Open the bottle: press the cap and turn it anticlockwise (Figure 1).
- Insert the syringe adaptor into the bottle neck (Figure 2).
- Take the syringe and put it in the adaptor opening (Figure 3).
- Turn the bottle upside down (Figure 4).
- Fill the syringe with a small amount of solution by pulling the piston down (Figure 4A).Then push the piston upward in order to remove any possible bubbles (Figure 4B). Finally, pull the piston down to the graduation mark corresponding to the quantity in millilitres (ml) prescribed by your doctor (Figure 4C).
- Turn the bottle the right way up (Figure 5A).
- Remove the syringe from the adaptor (Figure 5B).
- Put the end of the syringe into your mouth and push the piston slowly back in to take the medicine.
- Wash the syringe with water and let it dry before you use it again (Figure 6).
- Close the bottle with the plastic screw cap - leave the syringe adaptor in the bottle.
1. Wash the syringe with water and let it dry before you use it again/after each dose. Instructions for how to wash the syringe: pull the plunger out of the syringe and wash both parts in warm soapy water. Then rinse with water (see figure 6 above).
2. Dry the two parts. Push the plunger back into the syringe. Keep it in a clean safe place with the medicine.
It is important to stick to your prescribed dose. If you or someone else takes too much medicine, contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department immediately. Always take any medicine left over with you and also the bottle of Methocarbamol oral suspension, as this will allow easier identification of the medicine.
If you forget to take a dose, simply take the next dose when it is due. Always leave at least 4 hours before taking any more dose of the methocarbamol oral suspension. DO NOT TAKE A DOUBLE DOSE OF SUSPENSIONTO MAKE UP FOR A MISSED DOSE.
Keep taking methocarbamol oral suspension until your doctor tells you to stop.

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
STOP taking your suspension and tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following rare symptoms:
- Confusion, convulsions, fits, and rash or swelling of the face or neck and shortness of breath which may be a sign of an allergy.
If you notice any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor:
- Yellowing of the skin and/or whites of the eyes.
The levels of your white blood cells may also be reduced which can lead to recurrent:
If any of the following side effects are troublesome, you should tell your doctor:
- Drowsiness, difficulty in sleeping,
- Restlessness, anxiety or worry,
- Dizziness,
- Memory loss,
- Blurred or double vision, rapid or unusual eye movements,
- Reddening of the eyes together with nasal stuffiness,
- Feeling sick or vomiting,
- Heartburn,
- Taste disturbance,
- Tremor or shakiness, mild muscle incoordination,
- Headache,
- Fever,
- Itching,
- A slow heartbeat,
- Flushing,
- Fainting or feeling faint,
- Low blood pressure.
If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. By reporting side affects you can also provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not use Methocarbamol oral suspension after the expiry date which is stated on the label of the container after “EXP”. The expiry refers to the last day of the month.
- Use within 30 days of opening the bottle.
- Do not throw away any medicines via waste water or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help to protect the environment.
Methocarbamol oral suspension
- Each ml of oral suspension contains 150 mg Methocarbamol.
The other ingredients are:
- Sodium Benzoate (E211), Glycerine, Magnesium Aluminium silicate, Cellulose gum, Citric acid monohydrate, Tri-Sodium citrate dihydrate, Sucralose, Tutti-Frutti flavour and Purified water.
Methocarbamol 750mg/5ml oral suspension is a ‘white to off white suspension’.
Methocarbamol 750mg/5ml oral suspension packaged in 180 ml type III Amber glass bottle with PP 28mm white CR closure lined with TE EPE
The package also contains a 10ml oral syringe with markings at 1ml and 0.25 ml intervals, along with an adapter.
