Methocarbamol contains the active ingredient methocarbamol (750mg) which belongs to a group of medicines called muscle relaxants.
Methocarbamol is used for the symptomatic treatment of painful muscle tension, especially in the lower back area (lumbago).
Methocarbamol is used in adults.
- are allergic to methocarbamol, or have had any problems in the past with medicines containing methocarbamol
- are allergic to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
- have ever suffered any brain damage or coma
- suffer from epilepsy or convulsions
- suffer from muscle weakness (a disease called myasthenia gravis)
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Methocarbamol.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist before taking Methocarbamol if you:
- are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
- are breastfeeding
- have, or have had, any kidney or liver problems
- are having any medical investigations or tests as Methocarbamol could interfere with the results. Tell your doctor that you are taking Methocarbamol before you have the test.
This medicinal product is not intended for use in children and adolescents as safety and efficacy in these patient groups have not been established.
If you are taking any of the following medicines, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist as Methocarbamol may interact with them:
- Barbiturates which can be taken for epilepsy or to help you sleep.
- Appetite suppressants to help you lose weight.
- Medicines for stomach upsets or sea-sickness (anti-cholinergics).
- Psychotropic drugs for the treatment of anxiety, depression or other mental illnesses.
- Pyridostigmine bromide, which is used for myasthenia gravis. You should not take methocarbamol if you have pathological muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis).
- If you are due to have anaesthetic for any reason, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Methocarbamol.
Consumption of alcohol during methocarbamol treatment may potentiate the effect of the medicine. Do not drink alcohol while you are taking methocarbamol.
Pregnancy
There is no experience available concerning the use of methocarbamol during pregnancy. The potential risk to humans is not known. You should not take methocarbamol during pregnancy.
Breast-feeding
It is not known whether methocarbamol and/or its metabolites pass into human milk. As a precautionary measure, you should not take methocarbamol if you are breast-feeding.
Fertility
No data are available concerning the influence of methocarbamol on human fertility.
Methocarbamol may make you feel sleepy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you are sure you are not affected.
This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per film-coated tablet, that is to say essentially ‘sodium-free’.
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults: Take TWO tablets with a little water, FOUR times a day.
Sometimes a lower dose may be sufficient. You should spread the doses as evenly as possible over a 24-hour period.
Elderly: older patients may only need half the usual dose to give the same relief from the pain and muscle spasms.
Children: These tablets should not be given to children
Liver impairment: you may need a longer interval between taking the tablets if you have liver disease. You should always follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
These tablets are for short-term treatment. Take them for as long as your doctor has recommended, or until you no longer need them to ease the pain. Return any unused tablets to your pharmacist.
Method of administration
Methocarbamol is for oral use.
Swallow the film-coated tablets with plenty of water.
The film-coated tablets should be taken for as long as the symptoms of muscle tightness persist, but no longer than 30 days.
Contact your doctor immediately, go or take the person to the Accident and Emergency Department of your local hospital. Always take the bottle of Methocarbamol with you, even if it is empty.
Take your normal dose when you remember. Always leave at least 4 hours before taking any more tablets. DO NOT TAKE A DOUBLE DOSE OF TABLETS TO MAKE UP FOR A MISSED DOSE.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If you notice any of the following rare symptoms, you should STOP taking your tablets and tell your doctor immediately:
- confusion, convulsions, fits, and rash or swelling of the face or neck and shortness of breath which may be a sign of an allergy
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
Conjunctivitis, headache, dizziness, metallic taste, decreased blood pressure, nasal congestion, angioedema (acute-onset swelling of parts of the tissue and skin), rash, itching, nettle rash (urticaria), fever
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):
Anaphylactic reactions (allergic hypersensitivity reactions), loss of appetite, restlessness, anxiety, confusion, fainting, involuntary eye movement, giddiness, trembling, seizures, impaired vision, slow heart beat, hot flushes, retching (nausea) and vomiting
Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
Drowsiness, disturbance of coordination
If your child gets any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and bottle after EXP. The first two numbers indicate the month; the last four numbers indicate the year. The expiry date refers to the last date of that month.
This medicine does not require any special storage conditions
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.
The active substance is methocarbamol
Each film-coated tablet contains 750 mg methocarbamol
The other ingredients are:
Tablet core: maize starch, sodium starch glycolate (Type – A), povidone (K-30), sodium laurilsulfate, talc and magnesium stearate
Tablet coat: hypromellose 2910 (6mPas), titanium dioxide and macrogol 400.
Methocarbamol 750 mg film-coated tablets are white, film coated, capsule shaped biconvex tablet, debossed with ‘METT’ on one side and ‘750’ on the other side.
Methocarbamol 750 mg film-coated tablets are supplied in a white opaque round HDPE container.
Pack sizes: 100 film-coated tablets.
