Read all of this leaflet carefully before you start using this medicine because it contains important information for you.

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse have told you.

  • Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again.
  • Ask your pharmacist if you need more information or advice.
  • If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. See section 4.
  • You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.

1. What Boots Derma Care Ointment is and what it is used for

Boots Derma Care Ointment contains the active substance hydrocortisone which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids.

Boots Derma Care Ointment is used for the treatment of mild to moderate eczema, allergic contact dermatitis (e.g. reactions to plants, cosmetics), irritant contact dermatitis (e.g. reactions to detergents) and reactions to insect bites.

2. What you need to know before you use Boots Derma Care Ointment
Do not use Boots Derma Care Ointment:
  • If you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • On broken or infected skin such as impetigo, cold sores, acne, athlete’s foot.
  • On the face, eyes, anal or genital areas.

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances.

If your condition worsens during use consult a pharmacist or doctor – you may be experiencing an allergic reaction, have an infection or your condition requires a different treatment.

If you experience a recurrence of your condition shortly after stopping treatment, within 2 weeks, do not restart using the ointment without consulting a pharmacist or doctor. If your condition has resolved and on recurrence the redness extends beyond the initial treatment area and you experience a burning sensation please seek medical advice before restarting treatment.

Children and adolescents

Not recommended for children under 10 years of age, except under medical supervision.

Other medicines and Boots Derma Care Ointment

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Driving and using machines

Boots Derma Care Ointment has no influence on your ability to drive or to use machines.

3. How to use Boots Derma Care Ointment

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse have told you. Check with your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are not sure.

Check the tube seal is not broken before first use. Pierce tube seal with end of cap. Apply to the skin only.

Adults, the elderly and children over 10 years of age: Apply a very small amount on the affected area, once or twice a day, for a maximum of 7 days.

Do not use on children under 10 years of age, unless your doctor tells you to. Do not use more than the amount recommended above. If symptoms do not go away, talk to your doctor.

If you use more Boots Derma Care Ointment than you should

You should always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse have told you. If you use more Boots Derma Care Ointment than you should, contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately.

If you forget to use Boots Derma Care Ointment

Do not use a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

If you get any of these side effects, stop using the ointment and see a doctor:
  • Allergic reactions (e.g. skin rash, red or itchy skin, worsening of the condition you are treating).
  • Blurred vision. This side effect has been reported, but it is not known how often (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data).

Steroid withdrawal reaction:

If used continuously for prolonged periods a withdrawal reaction may occur on stopping treatment with some or all of the following features: redness of the skin which can extend beyond the initial area treated, a burning or stinging sensation, intense itching, peeling of the skin, oozing open sores.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

5. How to store Boots Derma Care Ointment

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the tube and carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Do not store above 25°C.

Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information
What Boots Derma Care Ointment contains

The active substance is hydrocortisone. The ointment contains 10 mg of hydrocortisone in every 1 g (1%). The other ingredient is white soft paraffin.

What Boots Derma Care Ointment looks like and contents of the pack

Boots Derma Care Ointment is a soft, smooth, white to off-white ointment and is available in aluminium tubes containing 15 g.
